Neck pain and sleepless nights: here's how to sleep with an inflamed neck
Have you been suffering from neck pain lately. You can't sleep well and when you get up in the morning, you struggle to even turn around? If standing is difficult, lying down can really be unbearable.
Neck pain is a symptom, which in itself, indicates a lack of rest, so it is important to understand how to sleep with an inflamed neck in order to eliminate discomfort and regain energy. Here are some helpful tips!
Why does the neck become inflamed?
Cervical pain refers to all painful conditions affecting the cervical spine, including the shoulders, upper back, and arms.
The pain is usually attributable to muscle contractures, and there can be many causes, but the most common ones are:
Stress, which results in constant and unmotivated tension in the muscle strips.
Prolonged poor posture
Sedentary lifestyle
Trauma, such as muscle tears
General back and leg problems
3 positions for sleeping with an inflamed neck
Rest is essential for the body's recovery, all the more so if you are going through a time of tension and imbalance, such as when you have neck pain.
But how to sleep with an inflamed neck to speed up the healing process and truly rest?
- Supine position. In general, this is the best position for sleeping, and all the more so when the neck is in pain, because it helps keep the neck line naturally curved and facilitates proper positioning of the spine. You will thus avoid further strain on the cervical spine and back pain.
- Right pillow. Essential for maintaining the physiological curvature of the cervical spine (i.e., the first 7 vertebrae).
- Right mattress. The cervical spine is affected by the general posture that you assume while sleeping, so you need to choose a mattress that supports your weight well and ensures proper alignment of the entire spine, perhaps giving a massaging effect.
Which pillow to choose?
To relax your back and neck muscles when you are in bed, opt for a pillow that has certain characteristics:
Appropriate firmness and height. In order not to make the neck sink or rise, but to accompany the natural curvature, it should not be too high or low, but neither should it be too soft or stiff.
Comfortable material. Best if it is breathable and environmentally friendly, such as natural fiber, so that it can ensure coolness.
High quality. Manufactured according to certain quality standards that ensure comfort and adequate support for a long time.
